6 tbsp butter plus extra for greasing

14 oz/400 g canned apricots in natural juice

1 lb/450 g cooking apples peeled and thickly sliced

Scant 2/3 cup all-purpose flour

Drain the apricots leaving 4 tablespoons of the juice. Place the apples and apricots in the prepared oven-proof dish with the reserved apricot juice and toss to mix thoroughly.

Sift the flour into a large bowl. Cut the butter into small cubes and rub it in with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine bread crumbs. Stir in the rolled oats superfine sugar and chocolate chips.

Sprinkle the crumble mixture over the apples and apricots and level the top roughly. Do not press crumble down onto the fruits. Bake in the oven for 40 – 45 minutes or until the topping is golden. Serve the crumble hot or cold.
